Carlos Diegues, one of the moving forces behind Brazil's Cinema Novo, turns his attention to the traveling musicians and variety players of the Caravana Rolidei. They ply their trade along the backroads of the newly developing nation, witnessing rapidly vanishing ways of life as they, like other wandering minstrels, have become an endangered species. The leader of the group is played by Jose Wilker, the devilish spirit of "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" (1978). They lead a charmed and charming life, never losing their wits in the face of adversity.
