DIVINE EMA is based on the true story of the famed opera diva Ema Destinnova, who, because of an act born out of her own absent-mindedness, became embroiled in accusations of espionage during World War I. Only a pardon from Kaiser Wilhelm himself averted her execution. Although her life is spared, she is placed under house arrest, denied a passport and spied upon by her lover. A woman alone, Ema courageously struggles to prove her patriotism, stave off destitution and salvage a badly-damaged reputation. The film offers a portrait of a strong, flamboyant woman who, despite the humiliation foisted upon her, clings to her convictions and refuses to let others use her for their own political advantage.
