IDLERS OF THE FERTILE VALLEY laces a sober examination of human inertia with black humor to make an acerbic comment on the human condition. A peasant family inherits a rich estate unexpectedly upon the death of a wealthy relative. The good life, now astoundingly within the grasp of family members, breeds economic enslavement in the same manner that poverty once did. In contrast to the passivity willingly embraced by the nouveau riche father and sons is the energy of the lovely family maid, who alternately uses and is used by them.
