In the working-class suburbs of Prague, amid the economic depression, encroaching fascism and threat of war that form the backdrop for the 1920s and '30s, the children of a cobbler attain maturity. LOVE BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS chronicles the fortunes of the family while focusing on Kajda, the youngest member, as he watches his brother and sister take on adult responsibilities. His own first, tentative steps toward maturity are taken when he becomes involved with Paja, his first romantic interest. The transition from a state of innocence to worldly knowledge is completed when the chivalrous Kajda finds he must compete with his more mature older brother for Paja's affection. Although Kajda and his family do not escape their share of the tragedy of the times, the emphasis of the film is on comedy and human revelation and growth.
