A young provincial variety show emcee orchestrates occasions to make a career and, having reached the decision that he will be successful, sacrifices everything he can and everything that is necessary to reach his goal. His imagination is stirred by the great party that will be held on the occasion of his hometown's 500th anniversary. The party will be on TV, and though his name is not listed among the candidates for promotion, he nevertheless feels that his years of aspiration and preparation afford him the moral right to advancement.
