TAXI ZUM KLO (Taxi To The Toilet)

Based on director/actor Frank Ripploh's autobiography, TAXI ZUM KLO takes you about as far as you can go in this totally honest, explicit and entertaining depiction of the gay lifestyle in West Berlin. Frank (a.k.a. Peggy von Schnottgenberg) has a libido that can't be felled even by hepatitis, so he throws a coat over his hospital gown and escapes by taxi to the nearest public toilet, site of many a nightly pickup during his jaunty cruising ventures. In a movie theater he meets Bernd (who also plays himself), and the two become live-in lovers. The problem is that Bernd is monogamous and Frank needs promiscuity as much as he needs to pursue Berlin's nightly glitter. By day Frank is a caring, innovative teacher in a secondary school, by night he is unwilling to be cooped up at home with Bernd. One of the funniest scenes takes place in Frank's classroom after an all-night drag ball. Still festooned in his Indian Princess get-up, Frank comes out of the closet with a royal flourish and encourages his class to act out their fantasies. The ensuing free-for-all looks like something out of "Zero For Conduct" (1933).

"The film is witty, charming, rigorously unsentimental and fair to all its characters. . . TAXI is a big step toward liberating the screen." - Richard Corliss, Time
