In 1936, concerned citizens from around the world poured into Spain to help defend the country's Socialist government from Franco's Fascist takeover. Ken Loach's magnificent new film tells th story of a young Liverpudlian named Dave Carr who is drawn into this conflict. Aroused by a speech about th injustices in Spain, he heads to Barcelona to fight for land and freedom. Full of missionary zeal and passion, he rubs shoulders with similarly strong-willed amateur fighters, coping with inadequate arms and fragmented organization. Their exploits, reminiscent of Hemingway's "For Whom The Bell Tolls," are a mixture of triumph and tragedy, love and death. Leavened with a straight-from-the-hip sense of humor and a distinctive love for its characters, LAND AND FREEDOM is an impassioned examination of political idealism confronting a ruthless enemy. Ken Loach has again given us a richly detailed, complex film where the personal and the political are inextricably interwined.
