THE MOVIES BEGIN

Year: 2000
Country: International
Run Time: 101 minutes

Rare, complete and scrupulously restored, in new 35mm prints and with live piano accompaniment, here are 28 of the most important and fascinating movies made in France and America during the first two decades of the cinema. Among the highlights: the first film ever projected on a screen (WORKERS LEAVING THE LUMIERE FACTORY); three films made for the Edison kinescope, including the scandalous THE KISS; the first science-fiction film, George Melies' A TRIP TO THE MOON; two cartoons, including Winsor McCay's LITTLE NEMO; Melies' wild version of television, LONG DISTANCE WIRELESS PHOTOGRAPHY; films by D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett; and, from the Edison vaults, a hand-colored print of one of the most popular films ever made, Edwin S. Porter's THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. A unique opportunity to see the earliest movies as they were seen by their earliest audiences, this program brings to life the films that first set out to capture life. Silent with live piano accompaniment.
