Prostitute. Drug addict. Disenfranchised minority. Transvestite. Assault victim. Singer. Actor. Actress. Author. Politician. And what does your resume look like? Meet Georgina Beyer, born George Beyer in New Zealand's farm country, of native Maori heritage. After coming out of the closet as a gay man to his single mother in 1978, Beyer would spend the ensuing years as a Wellington "sex worker," cabaret singer, drag queen, film and television performer. But it was in 1995, when the surgically-altered Georgina ran for mayor of the seemingly-conservative rural village of Carterton that she received world media attention. Her city hall bid was only an early chapter of this Renaissance tran's remarkable second career, and in 1999 she became part of the Labour government of NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark. GEORGIE GIRL profiles the world's first transgendered-aboriginal-all-original elected official. While Georgina Beyer's detractors have accused her of being a self-promoting dilettante, voguing her way through the invented role of a lifetime, the heroine herself comes across as a serious civil servant (she reportedly banned the documentary film crew from following her around during her first year in office, lest it distract her from government duties); she's articulate, caring, in touch with the issues and accessible to her constituents, be they traditional sheep farmers, Maoris reclaiming their tribal culture, or legends of urban transsexual nightlife, who still fondly remember Georgina's days as a stripper and lip-sync diva.
