Mom and Me

Set in Oklahoma City—aka the “manliest city in the United States”—MOM AND ME bases itself around a local radio program called The Joe Show. On Mother’s Day, its host, Joe Cristano, asks his male listeners to call in to talk about their relationships with their moms. This very simple set-up blossoms into an intimate sociological look at this unique bond. From a disabled teenager and his overprotective mom, to a middle-aged man dealing with his mother’s Alzheimer's disease, to several sons who are in the process of healing past rifts, this documentary examines the mother/son connection from a variety of angles and perspectives. It often gets emotional, but also offers a sizable amount of hilarious moments. The film succeeds in proving that the tie that binds a mother to her boy is often unbreakable, surviving any obstacle life may present. Even the toughest dudes on the planet will want to call their mom after the credits roll. –E.F.
