Pamela and her daughter, Allegra, couldn’t be more different. A 44-year-old single mother, carefree Pamela spends most of her time partying with friends, while Allegra, a straitlaced precocious 15-year-old, spends most of her time doing art and talking about veganism. Embarrassed by Pamela’s reputation, and trying to get in with the cool crowd at school, Allegra tries to distance herself from her mother. But avoiding her becomes nearly impossible after Pamela finds out she is pregnant from a drunken one-night-stand with a local man nearly half her age. As the news of Pamela’s pregnancy spreads like wildfire in their small town, Pamela’s and Allegra’s relationship is put to the test. To get through this “bump along the way,” both Pamela and Allegra must learn to stand fully by themselves and support each other through the process. An uplifting dramedy saturated with the charms of Irish humor, A BUMP ALONG THE WAY is an entertaining delight. — G.S.
