In his debut feature, writer/director/star, Matthew Fifer, delivers a confident, complex portrait of a young bisexual man floating through life in New York City. Assembled like a mosaic, the film gathers small everyday moments in the life of Ben, a rudderless twenty-something who spends most of his time compulsively engaging in no-strings-attached, promiscuous sex throughout the city. Seemingly an intelligent, self-aware, charming young man, his behavior hints at a more deeply rooted interior wound that he blithely deflects with his carefree wit and movie star good looks. His life takes a pivot when he begins to regularly date Sam, a young professional black man dealing with his own array of internal demons. They begin to know each other more intimately, opening up as they explore an exquisitely photographed New York— the city’s distinctive urban poetry captured here in a quietly reflective light. Sensitively made and beautifully wrought, this surprising feature untangles the myriad of ways in which childhood traumas manifest themselves in adult life, particularly for that of queer men. CICADA is a thoughtful, unexpected, tender new love story for the modern era. — R.J.T.
