Terry Gilliam, cult director and Monty Python alum, spent almost 30 years bringing his vision for Cervantes’ Don Quixote to the big screen. Gilliam and his crew eventually began shooting the classic tale in 2000. This failed first attempt—as chronicled in Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe’s documentary, “Lost in La Mancha” (2002) —was plagued by massive flooding, a lack of funds, and an overall “cursed” chain of events. The film spent over a decade longer in development hell while its budget dwindled to less than half the original size. But with the help of collaborators old and new (including Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce), Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” was finally released in 2018. With Fulton and Pepe at the helm once more, HE DREAMS OF GIANTS follows the realization of one man’s decades-long obsession. Both a behind-the-scenes documentary and director retrospective, this personal dive into the fantasy and frustration of Terry Gilliam questions whether impossible dreams are best left to dreaming. — D.O.
