During a live reenactment in Sarajevo of the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, King Nicolas III of Belgium is mistakenly shot in the ear. Three days later, he wakes up in an off-the-grid sanatorium on a Croatian island where he is kept in the dark about his recently failed state and the consequential collapse of the European Union. As facts and rumors quickly spread of the international crisis, a powerful nationalist group called Nova Europa declares that a new Emperor of Europe will soon be announced to the world… from the sanatorium itself. As the sanatorium patients anxiously await the arrival of their new leader, a series of peculiar events make for a hilariously odd situation. Delightfully strange and satirical, THE BAREFOOT EMPEROR will keep you laughing (and guessing) until the end. While you don’t have to see the first film to enjoy the second, THE BAREFOOT EMPEROR is the sequel to “King of the Belgians,” which screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival in 2016.
