New life has just sprung from Luma, a seasoned dairy cow eager to meet her baby. As Luma licks her young calf clean and the two nuzzle lovingly in the first moments of her daughter’s life outside the womb, so begins COW, the intimate observations of daily life for this mother and daughter. Minimal human dialogue from the passing farmhands can be deciphered throughout the film, leaving the narration to the animals themselves. Even with limited conversation, these cows have plenty to say about their days on the farm. Cameras follow Luma and her daughter on their respective journeys of perpetual pregnancy, being pumped of milk day and night, feedings, and unbridled freedom grazing in green pastures. With rare access to each stage and cycle of these cows’ lives, audiences glean the complicated existence of these animals and the mental and physical toll they endure to provide sustenance for many. Captivating, shocking, and incredibly emotional, this documentary undoubtedly pleads for compassion and understanding for these worthy beings. —A.B.
