In the aftermath of the election of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, the Martins family struggles to navigate the complexities of their working class lives. Balancing their financial realities with their individual aspirations, each family member is chasing down their own dream. And each person’s dreams might conflict with everybody else's. To her parents dismay, Eunice longs to move out of the family home and in with her girlfriend. Despite his father’s insistence on pursuing a professional career in soccer, Deivinho dreams of following in the footsteps of his hero, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and exploring space. Tercia, the mother, wants the best for both of her children, but she can’t shake the feeling that she is attracting bad events in everyone's lives. And Wellington, the father, is doing his best to keep the whole family afloat. As each person's secrets and desires gradually come to light, the Martins family will experience their ups and downs, both alone and as a unit. A dynamic but ultimately uplifting film, MARS ONE proves sometimes everything needs to fall apart before it comes together. —G.S.
