A beautiful young orphan named Fei leads a quiet life in the countryside, where she lives alone and attends school, with intentions to become a doctor. Played by the stunning actress Zhou Xun, Fei is a complex character: born into the wealthy Li household as the illegitimate daughter of Master Li and one of his maids, Fei is proud and poor, on the cusp of womanhood. When she is called to the Li home after the patriarchís death, Fei has very mixed feelings; she is both repulsed and attracted to the decadent lifestyle of her half-sister, Ying (the luscious Vivian Wu), and Yingís rakish fiancé, Huang. Fei needs to sign the inheritance papers for Ying to own the estate, yet Fei refuses. The two sisters do a daring dance around each other, and Huang becomes caught in the middle. Meanwhile, revolution is sweeping the country along with severe ìreforms,î and itís unclear who might prevail in this exquisitely designed drama. (In Mandarin with English subtitles) ñA.S.
