Martha sucks at her job as a telemarketer, but she’s great at burying treasure—or “planting” as she likes to call it. As a Planter, Martha buries trinket-filled tins in the middle of nowhere for local treasure hunters to find. If she’s lucky, the receiver will leave a fee, earning her a small profit. Still living in her childhood home in the desert after the recent death of her parents, Martha’s reclusive lifestyle is shaken up by the unexpected arrival of Sadie, a Jesus-loving young woman with multiple personalities. Sadie needs somewhere to live and help coping with her alter-egos triggered by religious visions. Martha needs help selling 30 air conditioning units in two weeks or she’ll be fired. Both women need a friend. Debut directors-writers-stars, Alexandra Kotcheff and Hannah Leder, collaborated on this truly independent production as the only crew on set, creating their characters’ vibrant yet lonely world virtually by themselves. Through simple ingenuity, an idiosyncratic script, and a splash of Wes Anderson, the darkly comedic THE PLANTERS shines as both a feat in DIY filmmaking and a tale about finding inherent value in yourself and others. — D.O.
