In LaFayette, Georgia, where roadside farm stands of peaches are as commonplace as the Confederate flag, Chris is full of rage. After enlisting in the U.S. Army in response to 9/11, Chris spent 13 years defending his country and learning a deep hatred for the Muslim community. When he returned home, he found solace in narcotics and the KKK in an attempt to make peace with his wounds from combat. Two hours south in the peaceful pocket of Clarkston, the state’s largest resettlement area for refugees, lives Syrian refugee Heval. Forced to flee his country at the age of 12, Heval earned an unshakable resilience before becoming a prominent cardiologist in his community, where more than 100 ethnicities thrive. When the lives of a white supremacist and a Kurdish doctor intersect, Chris and Heval are challenged to see themselves in one another. Necessary and perpetually timely, REFUGE lays down arms in an act of vulnerable compassion and the ability to listen and learn to love those we have feared. —A.B.
