Civil and political unrest from the late 1960s still permeates the working-class streets of Belfast. Deep-seated, generational anger continues to boil, and the community suffers from an ongoing cycle of violence, drug addiction, and poverty. The mission for Principal Kevin McArevey of Holy Cross Boys’ Primary School, a product of the turbulent community he serves, is to ensure history is not repeated with the next generation of students sitting in his classrooms. As an unconventional approach, McArevey uses philosophy as his central focus for conflict resolution, discipline, and crucial critical thinking skills for his students. The children are given the opportunity to openly talk about their feelings, respectfully discuss hypothetical scenarios, and apply their studies to the volatile world around them. YOUNG PLATO quickly reveals the shift in civility when young minds are encouraged to think for themselves. Honest, raw, and refreshingly forward-thinking, this film underscores that hatred is learned, and our children are watching. Think and act with care. —A.B.
