You don’t have to be the loudest voice, embrace the biggest personality, or have the most number one hits to make an indelible impact, and Tanya Tucker is proof. Tucker’s 1972 hit single, Delta Dawn, catapulted her to recognition at the age of 13. And from then on she carved out her space—writing and working with the greats while maintaining her own sense of self as she became known as one of the premier voices and songwriters of the Outlaw country movement. This success, however, never exactly hit the “mainstream.” Tucker worked and toured and played music for years, holding her place, mostly content with the world she had built for herself. It wasn’t until singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile approached her with the idea of making an album, her first original work in ten years, that Tucker began to understand the creative inspiration she is to so many lives and careers. With a floating, non-intrusive hand, director Kathlyn Horan lets Tucker take center stage. THE RETURN OF TANYA TUCKER - FEATURING BRANDI CARLILE gives her the chance to finally accept and receive her flowers, reflecting on where she’s been and who she’s helped find their own voice. —B.R.
