The fabulous David Oyelowo (“Selma”) stars in this sorrow-laden drama about a man overwhelmed by grief. His wife, Fiona, is killed in a car accident and his world quickly turns dark. Oyelowo’s Sherwin falls into a deep depression, tries to numb himself with alcohol, and can’t seem to get off the couch. Then an invitation to visit arrives from an unlikely source: Fiona’s ailing mother, Lucinda, who was not on good terms with either her daughter or son-in-law. Sherwin accepts anyway and drives from Atlanta to rural Maine. Walking among the beautiful forests and lakes is calming. The testy showdowns with his harsh mother-in-law (played by two-time Oscar® winner Dianne Wiest), not so much. Maris Curran’s FIVE NIGHTS IN MAINE features gripping performances from a strong cast that also includes Rosie Perez. Through intimate close-ups and spare scenes, Curran explores how we process grief and how individuals chart different paths towards healing. –C.O.
